The science of LCD technology

Liquid Crystal Display Televisions (LCD TV) are televisions that use LCD technology to produce the image on the screen. The technology used is generally TFT, because this allows for size, especially depth reduction, lower weight and reduced energy consumpton. These LCD screens can also be used as computer monitors.

A liquid crystal display (LCD) is a thin, flat display device made up of any number of colour or monochrome pixels arrayed in front of a light source or reflector.

Early LCD televisions had drawbacks relative to the traditional visual display technologies for televisions and computer monitors. Fast-moving images displayed were with "ghosting" and because light emitted directly ahead, viewing wasn't so great when viewing the TV screen at an angle. LG electronics have made many developments over the years have solved most of these problems.LCD televisions, along with Plasma displays, have become more popular worldwide than Cathode Ray display televisions.

It was widely believed that LCD television technology was suited only to smaller sized flat-panel televisions at sizes of 40 inch or less, as it could not compete with plasma tv technology for screens larger than this because plasma held the edge in cost and performance. However, LG LCD TV's can now offer the same performance.

Each pixel of an LCD TV typically consists of a layer of molecules aligned between two transparent electrodes, and two polarizing filters, the axes of transmission of which are (in most of the cases) perpendicular to each other. With no liquid crystal between the polarizing filters, light passing through the first filter would be blocked by the second (crossed) polarizer.

Television manufacturers, such as LG, have announced plans to invest millions of pounds in LCD production over the next few years, with televisions and LCD monitors expected to be the key markets.

With the vast improvements in LCD TV technology, it has narrowed the gap between LCD and plasma. LG can now offer the lower weight, lower priced, higher available resolution (crucial for HDTV), and lower electrical power consumption. The LCD market has now become more competitive against plasma in the television market.

It was back in 2006 that analysts found that the LCD TV market were over taking plasmas, especially in the 40 inch range.
